Morning routines

Keeping house doesn't come naturally to me. There are aspects of it I love - gardening springs to mind. There are aspects I despise - washing up in particular. The rest of domestic life falls somewhere in between theses extremes, more often than not skewed towards the negative end of the scale. My natural inclination is to spend a lot of my time living in my own head pondering other matters unrelated to the reality in front of me, whilst those very real things build up, topple over and cause an even bigger mess.

Then I became a parent and the time I had to just live in my own head and ponder 'things' pretty much evaporated, along with the mental energy that went with it. That is when I really began to focus on my day to day life, my surroundings. I saw the ugly reality of the two day old washing up pile, the laundry still waiting to be folded, the stuffed to bursting cupboards of 'stuff'. I had been brought down to earth with a bump and actually had to live in my physical environment - and it appalled me. I began to change.

The decluttering commenced, the housework was manageable, time had been freed up for baking and gardening and crafting. Life was good and getting better. Just when I thought I had 'got' it, it was gone again in a whirl of sleepless nights and the chaos of integrating a new baby's preferred routine with the one that was already established. More chaos ensued, though a more manageable one.

Routines are grounding, I get that now.  The more chaotic and time constrained life is, the more important it is to integrate a little bit of routine. A morning routine is especially grounding, it sets you up for the rest of the day. Get the first hour right and the rest should follow. And so I am trying to begin again, to get off on the right foot. I wake up, come downstairs and put the coffee on. I put in a load of laundry and I wash up last nights dishes (both of which can be done with a foggy just woken up state of mind) getting my least favourite jobs over and done with. We sit and eat breakfast and drink our coffee and get ready for the day. The most productive hour of my day, unchanging, regardless of the rest of my schedule. A little normality has been restored.

Other routines will follow and routines will also evolve over time if they no longer suit. If like me you are disinclined towards routine, a simple plan for the first hour of the day is perhaps the best place to begin. Set several things going all at once - the coffee, the laundry, the washing up - and let each thing flow into the other, stirring you to life gradually.

I have always been a person that likes to just do things first thing in the morning. My husband is not. He can sit for an hour sipping the same coffee and staring into space. I get up - put the kettle on - put a load of washing on - put the dishs away from the night before - make hubbies lunch. I get waht your post is about and I agree totally. From someone who just hates routine but knows I can't survive without it. Cheers, Wendy

I love the morning, unfortunately, so do my two littles, and so trying to sneak off in the morning without them noticing is quite difficult. The past several weeks I have been involved in the "hello mornings challenge." It has helped for me to have someone to be accountable to. And I totally agree that getting a little bit of a routine helps the rest of the day go much smoother. We are in the process of trying to do a huge declutter of our home in the hopes we can sell and build something much smaller. ie something that doesn't take nearly as long to clean :-)

I'm like that, as far as all the house work goes. :/

I woke up to a sick hubby. Other than that, I am making home made chicken broth and home made chicken soup.

I just loved your description of real things building up and toppling over into a bigger mess while your attention is on other "things."
I have a lot of potential "topple" staring me in the face right now...suppose I'd best get off the internet? Thanks for the nudge :)

I am naturally inclined to schedules and lists and getting things done so I guess that is a blessing but I can be over organized which is not good either. This morning I was thinking what a huge blessing it is to have the wonderful machines that get things done for me. I had the washer and dryer going, the coffee maker going and a loaf of bread in the bread machine. Just think if we had to do all those tasks manually!

We've been striving to eat breakfast these days, as now that I'm back in school and broke, if I didn't have time to pack a lunch, I could do some serious harm to myself being out of the house all day. But a nice hearty breakfast will take me farther.

Mornings can be so peaceful -- but a lot of the time, I'd so much rather be sleeping!

I have a cup of tea brought to me in bed then it's my turn to make the toast (eaten in bed!). Once breakfast is out of the way then I feed the cats, clear up the kitchen, sweep the floor, mop the floor and hoover downstairs. Then it's time for the first 'tea break' of the day. I always have to have a clean kitchen floor - it sets me up for the rest of the day!

Sadge, I think I know a little of what you mean. After years of living very happily alone, my man has just moved in with me and some of my beloved routines have gone out the window. no more leisurely reading the paper over coffee on a Saturday morning - instead we're up and out for a walk. But the joy of having him around far outweighs not knowing which cupboard he's put the saucepan back in. :-)
